40 Motivational Songs That’ll Keep You Refreshed!

By Ellesse

I love inspirational songs. When I used to commute to the office, there was something I would never leave the house without. My pda phone. Not only does it contain my appointments and schedules, it had my favourite speakers’ seminar mp3 and a compilation of upbeat & inspirational songs. Such inspirational songs never fail to bring up the vibes in me and spice up my mornings. A very good monday morning blues killer!

Upon the request of one of the Goal Setting College reader Chris, I’ve taken the liberty to compile this list of popular top motivational songs for your enjoyment. I’ve even added some of my personal favourites! But remember, even though inspirational music has the power to drive and motivate you, nothing beats the sound of your inner voice.

Thank you for this amazing resource of songs Ellesse and thank you even more for linking to the Paul Potts story. I’ll be linking to both of these from my site in the near future.

  2. Ellesse at 3:43 am

Alex, thank you! Paul Potts’ little story never fail to bring out the goose pimples. It has reached out to everyone in the world with this simple message : Everyone, everyone can achieve their dreams.

As long as you dare to dream and dare to put it to action.

    Inspiring.

  3. Al at 7P at 6:40 am

Hi Ellese – you have yet again successfully put together a fine list. The video of Paul Potts is great. From what I understand, he even had a performance tour recently.

Cool to see that some of my favorites are on this list as well. Some of these songs are on my iPod now. “O Fortuna” and “Time to Say Goodbye” is in the same folder as Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (Symph No. 9). I guess that’s why they call them the classics!

  4. Ellesse at 12:59 pm

Al, the Paul Potts video is fantastic. My brother had watched it umpteen times. In fact it was through him that I got to know about Paul’s achievement.

Glad you liked the compilation! I tried to include the popular traditional motivational songs. But I do acknowledge the fact that different songs had different appeal to people. Oh, Symphony No 9 was on my original list too!

  5. kirsten at 7:46 pm

Great songs, Ellesse! When I take a long drive, I also need good music.

I also like “Turn the Beat Around” by Vicki Sue Robinson. Puts me in a good mood right away. Verdi’s “Va pensiero” from the opera Nabucco is also very stirring.

  6. Steven Aitchison at 9:06 pm

some great songs here ellesse thanks for taking the time to compile this.

    i would have to add:

Search for the hero – M People
    Superstar – Love Inc
Saints and Sinners – Paddy Casey (fabulous song)
Free fallin’ – Tom Petty (nothing like it driving along the mororway singing your heart out.

  7. Pinny Cohen at 10:46 pm

Orinoco Flow – Enya is an amazing song. I think almost every single one of her songs is great to design or think to.

  8. Ellesse at 2:08 am

@Kirsten, the vibes of ‘Turn the Beat Around’ is really infectious. Really gets you moving into action! Love the Verdi recommendation… It was one of the songs we sang when I was in the high school choir! Bring back fond memories…

@Steven, great songs, all of them. And I especially loved Free fallin’…

@Pinny, totally agree! Enya’s songs never fail to bring out some bright ideas. They were often used in personal development seminars & weddings over here too :) !

Everyone, thanks for introducing some great songs to me… good stuff. And for those who wants to listen to the new recommendations, just go to Youtube and search for the music video.

    Keep the recommendations coming!

  9. Gamy Rachel at 2:11 pm

Awesome list Ellesse! You sure do find some gem for us readers here at Goal Setting College

  13. Ellesse at 9:30 am

Hey Ritu, it’s my pleasure. Especially if it’s helpful to my readers!

  14. UncommonBlonde at 3:52 pm

Thanks! I needed these to get through the morning at work today. I’m now rocking out to “Beautiful Day”

  15. Ellesse at 7:31 am

Hey UncommonBlonde, thanks for popping over! Hope you enjoy the songs. Ah… I love BlogHer for bringing me new visitors!

  16. Hanne Sena at 7:32 am

i would like to suggest song from S Club 7, Bring It All Back. ^_^

  17. Ellesse at 2:05 pm

Thanks Hanne for your contribution! Anyone else? :)

  18. AC at 6:39 am

A lot of great motivational songs there. Another I frequently use is “Better Now” by Collective Soul.

  19. Ellesse at 12:08 pm

AC, that’s one full of energy! Thanks for your suggestion!

  20. Ben at 11:00 pm

Orinoco Flow was #1 in the UK when I was born; motivation for anyone! I suppose that makes me a spring chicken…

  21. oli at 3:03 pm

Don’t forget Beautiful World by Colin Hay!

  22. Ellesse at 6:28 am

    Ben, :)

Oli, thanks for adding that song. A good one I’ve omitted!

  23. Frank at 7:23 am

If you don’t mind going back to the 80’s, might as well add the Greatest American Hero theme song or the lesser known Spikolli’s Theme from The Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack. Also Neil Diamond did a 70s song tribute to Johnathan Livingston Seagul that’s pretty inspirational. I also like to play Queen’s Flash Gordon theme when I want to go on an ego trip or make fun of people who think they are the “Savior of the Universe!!” Being a Canadian myself, I can’t tollerate Celine Dion…my inspriation goes out the window when I hear her screaching.

  24. Ellesse at 9:31 am

Wow Frank, that’s some great introduction to the songs you’ve suggested! I’ll definitely check them out later on Youtube!…

And for Celine Dion, I’m really sorry if my listing of her songs have affected you in a way or another. I’ve tried to make the list as diversified as possible but I reckon that different people have different personal preferences, especially when it comes to something so moving such as songs or music. And I fully respect that!

Nonetheless, I sincerely thank you for dropping by and expressing your frank opinion :) Really appreciate that!

  25. tfhjt at 3:28 pm

You forgot the charles in charge theme

  26. Ellesse at 12:00 am

    Thanks for your suggestion!

  27. Neoxl at 7:08 am

You should add Somewhere over the rainbow/what a wonderful world by IZ. A great song sung by a great man.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL-uL2M3xvM

  28. Denise Voll at 8:45 am

You forgot to include “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones.

  29. Angela Duncan at 3:15 pm

Wow, the Paul Potts video and story is incredible!

Looks like he’s touring the entire world this year. Wonderful.

  30. T J Winton at 7:13 pm

Considering that you like Paul Potts, why aren’t any of his songs on the list? His CD titled “One Chance” has some wonderful songs on it, and his voice just can’t help but be inspirational. It is really hard to choose a favorite from his CD, but if I absolutely had to it would be “Nella Fantasia”.
BTW, he is still on tour, and will be touring worldwide until June.

  31. Ellesse at 5:55 am

@Neoxl, thanks for the link to the video! Israel must have been a inspirational personality! It’s a pity I didn’t get to know about his songs prior to that! Thanks for the great introduction.

@Denise, thanks for the kind reminder! Rolling Stones’ a classic too.

@Angela, yeah. He was not confident of himself, often a subject of bully when he was younger but that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the world’s greatest inspiration. Good stuff!

@TJ, I’m sorry to admit I didn’t buy his album **embarrassed**. In fact, if wasn’t for my brother who frequents youtube, I wouldn’t have heard about his amazing story. That’ being said, I’m glad you’ve done the work for us by introducing his songs. Will definitely check them out! Thanks TJ…

  32. Tom Volkar / Delightful Work at 5:32 pm

    Hi, Thanks for this list.
My favorite is “The Power of The Dream”. The lyrics really inspire and motivate me. Check this small excerpt out :

    “Feel the flame forever burn…..”
“There’s so much strength in all of us
    Every woman child and man
It’s the moment that you think you can’t
    You’ll discover that you can”

  109. Nick at 6:20 pm

    Trying to help Bruce

I could well be wrong but the song maybe the one about wearing Sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen).

Hope this is the right one

  123. ToriaHawk at 3:32 am

Great list, but where’s Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance?” I’d also like to add:
Bon Jovi- Livin’ On A Prayer
The Pretenders- I’ll Stand By You
    O.A.R.-This Town
    The Five Stairsteps- Ooh Child
    Van Halen- Jump
USA for Africa- We Are The World
    Journey- Don’t Stop Believin’
    Dio- Rainbow in the Dark
    Steve Earle- Someday
and this may be a lil heavy and stripper-esque(no offense), but Scorpion’s “Rock You Like A Hurricane” gets me in the first three seconds… then again, so does every Bon Jovi song and most 80’s songs.

  124. melanie at 8:53 am

Avril Lavigne – Keep Holding On

  125. madi at 4:43 am

    another one of my favourites:

  131. Lucija Petricevic at 6:53 am

    When there is nothing
it seems that space is the only thing that exists
    there is only void
and a meaningness to to void
    there is only silence
    there is only the invisible

there are no emotions no sorrow
    no grief, sadness or joy

    there is no physical existance,
    there is just nothing

But there is still the presence of God

    Lucija Petricevic, 31 Portland

My world is falling apart, I cannot visit my friends, my father died
i could not go to his funeral, I am sich with some infection
I miss my dog, my friends

    so music always help

Music is god’s way of showing us that love and healing can come
from a instrument or a vibration.

  139. Ellesse at 3:51 pm

All the Readers of this Blog.

Please find you songs in the list

And Ellesse it would be great if you could update the website by putting these songs in the “Other Recommendations” List.

  159. Ellesse at 2:03 am

@Ajay Thanks for your awesome contributions! Really really appreciate it! I probably won’t add another list to this post as there are already a lot of sites already offering similar recommendations. Besides you’ve indeed done everyone a great favor by posting these recommendations. Great picks!

  160. lulu at 5:31 am

i completely agree with this list i have one addition: Wont Back Down by Tom Petty. or Standing outside the Fire by Garth Brooks

  163. Brittany at 4:14 pm

Sorry thought of another couple songs. Hope by faith Evans Where is the love by Black Eyed peas and Everythings gonna be alright by Bob Marley, also remixed by Naughty by Nature. A very inspirational group is Braille (not the Religous Braille the rap group)

  164. mich at 10:03 pm

For Good from Wicked the musical is also very beautiful and powerful.

  165. white magpie at 12:24 pm

    Hero – Mariah Carey
Get up Stand up – Bob Marley

  166. AJ Harte at 4:27 pm

It’s “LOSE Yourself” not “LOOSE Yourself”. Loose is the opposite of tight.

  167. Ellesse at 5:03 pm

@AJ Thanks for highlighting! I’ve corrected it. :)

  168. Christian C at 12:25 pm

  175. ana at 4:48 am

‘believe in me’ by demi lovato is very inspirational and ‘beautiful’ by bethany dillon is too… those songs make you feel good about yourself. ‘face up’ by lights helps you move on with life and understand you are not the only one going through some sort of issue

  176. M. Jafar at 5:04 pm

another good stuff : “Far and Away” by Enya

  177. M. Jafar at 5:09 pm

Or “Human Being” by Van Hallen

  178. blushnash at 11:16 am

Thanks for sharing these songs guys and great job Ellesse! this is a really great site! I also like unwritten, very liberating. Songs from the broadway play RENT inspires me too. SEASONS OF LOVE, NO DAY BUT TODAY.

So no one thought of the Greatest love of all? Ok then. Firstly not only would Whitney Houston buy and sell Enya she has the best vocal ability (in her hey day) then all of them. The New York Times wrote that “Houston sings it with a forceful directness that gives its message of self-worth an astounding resonance and conviction” and called the song a compelling assertion of spiritual devotion, black pride, and family loyalty, all at once.Rolling Stone wrote that as the song builds, Houston “slowly pours on the soul, slips in some churchy phrasing, holds notes a little longer and shows off her glorious voice.”

Patrick Bateman: It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but “The Greatest Love of All” is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message, crucial really. And it’s beautifully stated on the album.

  211. Elizabeth at 10:24 pm

“Get Back Up” –TobyMac. So inspirational. I try to listen to it every morning!(:

  244. DeeDee at 8:54 pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Lovely, lovely music! xDDD

I live my life through music, and in my opinion it is the language of the soul.
Someone can verbally say something, and no one will understand it, but as soon as you add the melody, pretty much everyone understands what is being said!

Here are some songs that I find inspirational:

Dare You to Move – Switchfoot (I know someone already wrote this, but this song helped change my life, so I just HAD to add it!)
Time for Miracles – Adam Lambert
    Rain – Creed
    It’s Not Over – Daughtry
Born to Try – Delta Goodrem
    Broken – Lifehouse
    High – Lighthouse Family
What I’ve Done – Linkin Park
    Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
We Cry – The Script (This one inspires me in the sense that I don’t want to become the types of people that are being sung about… Those who give up on their dreams)
This is Who I Am – Vanessa Amorosi
    Be Ok – Ingrid Michaelson
Unwell – Matchbox 20 (I was sick for a long time, and this song gave me hope that I that I was capable of getting over it…
“Stay awhile and you will see, a different side to me…”)

I also like Owl City’s music that while lyrically may not be considered inspirational, I find the melody very uplifting!

  245. Nick at 4:28 am

    Where’s “Don’t Stop Believin'”- Journey??

  246. Twinkle Toes at 10:47 pm

You. Are. Awesome! This is just what I’ve been looking for! I’m working on an inspirational vidio for my Irish dance school (huge competition in December) and this list helped soooo much! Could I add one? Fighter, by Christina Aguilara. I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it yet, but it always get’s me excited for a competition (and the chorus reminds me of my dance teacher, hehe) Anyhoo, thanks again for putting this up!

    -B <3

Goshhhh I cant believe you wrote celine dione…… Its Celine Dion !!

  259. Jason Hodess at 11:35 pm

Well I have to say this list is unbelievable in terms of artists and music. Eminem, R. Kelly and the rest of them are simply amazing. Though I have one question for you. There is this band named Explosions in the Sky. Perhaps you have heard of them or maybe you haven’t but I suggest that you take a listen to them. They’re an instrumental band so no vocals but the artistry with the instruments is truly inspiring and will also get you excited for some event like sports or anything else, they are truly captivating with music. Also fun fact: They are the band that did most of the music in the film Friday Night Lights so please take a listen to them if you get a chance to.

  260. Ellesse at 3:02 am

@Jason I haven’t heard of them. Pardon my igorance! But I’ll sure check them out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I really do like the song list you have and I was pleased to see Remember The Name by Fort Minor on there. I think you may want to consider replacing any song though with Written In The Stars by Tinie Tempah. It’s actually really inspirational and once you find the meaning of the lyrics it makes you chase your dreams and believe in yourself, at least for me anyway.

Great list, my favorites are lose yourself and till I collapse. Those 2 songs always motivated me. You should also add not afraid, this song came out when I was a really lazy person and it really motivated me to make a change to my life, now I’m more active than I ever was :)
