Wealth generation is something that everyone should keep in mind as well. There's a chinese proverb that says "Tapping new resources and reducing expenses“ ... the former implies the importance of creating new income streams and personally I feel there's a strong reason why it's in front of reducing expenses :)
And I certainly believe they can go hand-in-hand too. If filling a bucket with water is assumed to be a form of wealth generation, the leak in the bucket is likened to the expenses outflow. At the end of the day, as long as there's a balance, it should be fine.

Mariam, you’ve made a good point! I focus more on wealth generation. It's a switch in mindset as I believe that financially successful people do not try to squeeze blood from a stone. That being said, you can only run when you've learned to crawl and walk. Taking chances like a change of career does require a strong financial safety net which can only be achieved if you've cleaned your house by budgeting and being financially responsible.

Even though I’m a PF blogger, I have to admit I don’t focus on budgeting. We're celebrating the Chinese New Year here too (and in many parts of the world too, I guess). So I really hope the tips will be handy for everyone!
@Andrea, geez. You must be one of the most intuitive savers I've seen. Good for you :) My mum's a bit like you in a way. She doesn't have those sophisticated worksheets or software I've mentioned. But somehow or rather, she would have enough on the plate. I guess sometimes, not being too obsessed about finances (like I do) works too! Thanks for sharing your interesting story!

@Alex, oh yes, it’s the back to reviewing your finances again after the holidays. Even though I do absolutely none of what you described. I tend not to track my money at all, but I do not spend it on much, either. I'm just not a big shopper. However, when I do want to spend some, it always seems to be there. I don't have any credit card debt whatsoever, and I manage to put a lot in my savings account every month. It's the most bizarre accounting system (or total lack thereof) but it somehow works.
This would probably make more structured people pull their hair out (my husband and I keep separate checking accounts because I would drive him nuts with my "intuitive" accounting system), but I have fun with it!

This is an excellent article, Ellesse!
